SSAA Tournament |
June 17, 2000
South
Boston Golden Corral traveled to Richmond, VA on this weekend to compete in their first
SSAA event of the season. The team played well enough for a second place finish.
In the opener, Golden Corral met Gentlemen's
Playground. When GC opened with 15 big runs in the first inning, it was clear that
the Gentlemen wanted no part of Golden Corral. This one ended in the fifth inning,
with GC winning easily, 27-10. Tuffy Eggleston had a huge game by going 5 for 5 with
4 homers. Kevin Henderson was 4 for 4 with a homer, Kirk Barnes, also, was 4 for 4,
John Hudson added a 4 for 5 effort, and Rodney Mosley, JoJo Owens, Lee Womack, and Tommy
Crews all chipped in 3 hits apiece in the rout.
Next up for The Corral was Dukes Roofing from
the Chesapeake area. Apparently GC had used up most of their offense in the opener,
as the team was flat in this one. Scoring a measly 9 runs will not win many ball
games, and it didn't here either. GC drops to 1-1 on the day by losing, 14-9.
Golden Corral needed to bounce back in the
round robin portion of this tournament, or the day would be a brief one. That is
just what they did when they met Outfitters Softball. GC rolled in the first inning
for 13 runs and never looked back. The game was called via the run-rule after five
innings. The final, 18-5, Golden Corral.
This pitted The Corral versus Dukes Roofing
again with the tall task of beating them twice to capture first place. GC came out
hitting, as a big grand slam from Lee Womack got GC going in the first. Owens and
Tony Conner added bombs in the second to give GC a 9-0 lead. A couple of unfortunate
homerun-outs from GC gave Dukes some life, and they started to come back in the fourth
inning. After the lead was cut to 9-7, Golden Corral answered with 8 more important
runs in their half of the sixth. Consecutive hits from Mosley, Owens, Eggleston,
Conner, Henderson, Crews, and Barnes got the inning going and set the table for Charles
Womack's big 2-run blast that capped off the inning. GC played sharp defense to hold
on for the 21-15 victory that forced the "if necessary" game.
Unfortunately for Golden Corral, some key
defensive positions were vacated due to absent players already, and the defense had to be
adjusted again as the third baseman had to leave midway during this final game. But,
the team fought hard throughout the game until they ran out of steam and fell to finish
second and give Dukes Roofing first place.
Team Leaders: John Hudson (.739, 5
