ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)

It works by splitting your existing telephone line signal into two, one for voice and the other for data. ADSL technology can work at up to 8 Mbit/s download. Upload speeds are 256 Kbps. ADSL is now available for home users in the South Boston area. Rates will vary accordingly and will be less than SDSL.

SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line)

This technology provides the same bandwidth in both directions, upstream and downstream. That means whether you're uploading or downloading information, you have the same high-quality performance. SDSL provides transmission speeds within a T1/E1 range, of up to 1.5 Mbps at a maximum range of 12,000 to 18,000 feet from a central office, over a single-pair copper wire. This option is ideal for small- and medium-sized businesses that have an equal need to download and upload data over the Internet.

In short, SDSL is mainly for business to have high speed access.  It requires more hardware, provides more bandwidth, thus is more expensive.  ADSL is for the home user.  It  piggybacks on your existing phone line, does not provide as much bandwidth as SDSL, and thus is more affordable.
